In 1995 the Parish Council organised a
celebration weekend for their Centenary and this was a wonderful experience. A
Centenary Committee was formed and they fund raised to cover the cost of the
weekend with a coffee morning held at Eveline Cook's house, a darts knockout and
auction held at The Plough and Nick Jackson organised a flying display with
the Large Model Association. There was also the usual jumble sales.
Anne Branton and Kathleen Fisher
contacted all villagers to ask them for the loan of village memorabilia and
they responded brilliantly. The display was in the Church and hundreds of
visitors came to look.
Myra Mason had always had a dream of
holding a Flower Festival in the Church and so it was arranged that this be
so. The Church looked absolutely wonderful for the whole weekend and thanks
for this were due to Myra and her daughter, Lyn Drescher, Pam Mason, Maggie
Boasman and Brenda Matson. Two arrangements were also given by the Withernsea
High School following the visit of HRH Prince Charles.
Sports were organised by the Withernsea
Rugby Club, now based in Hollym (see Rugby Club notes). These were not just
for children but adults as well!!
Bunting was put up around
the area where the street party was to be held. On the Saturday the weekend
started with the opening of the display in the Church followed by a street
party at 2 pm outside The Plough. Northside Road was closed for the day. The
village Women's Institute and several Mum's met in the village hall to prepare
the food. After the party all children in the village received a boxed
Paperweight with views incorporating depicting village life There are some
left if anyone would like one. Sports prizes were also given at the same time.
On the night time there was a BBQ.
On the Sunday there was a
Civic Church Service held in St. Nicholas and the church was full to capacity.
Anne Branton, an accomplished
embroiderer, was commissioned by the Parish Council to do a church kneeler
with a central panel depicting the centenary. There are 4600 stitches in the
central panel alone. The background is dark red and the panel is in yellow,
blue and black.
A commemorative newspaper was published and a copy given to all householders. There are some left should anyone like one and they should contact Hayley Harvatt, Tel: 01964 614952.
Barrie Fisher videoed the whole weekend
and it was very well done and the video tape is stored with the Parish Council
files. Copies of the paperweight and newspaper are lodged at the Archive
Department of the East Yorkshire Council at Beverley.
