HOLLYM CRICKET CLUB
Although cricket at the Plough Inn has been played for many years it wasn't until the formation of the Gentleman's Sunday Pub Cricket League in 1990 that some sort of order and structure was needed to organise a team willing to turn up and play week in week out.
The first man prepared to hold the reins was a young cricketer named Peter Green, a local lad and a member of the pubs dart team. Peter was responsible for the introduction of many new faces, several of whom continue to play for the team today. The club soon become known as a 'sporting outfit', mainly due to the fact that it received the 'wooden spoon' for the first two years of league status! Pub landlord, lan Robinson, was influential in this sad statistic as he chose to play every week and so drastically further weakened an already fragile batting line up.
In 1992, however, the tables turned. One of Peter Greens fledglings, Dave Turley, took over the mantle as Team (Captain and had no shame in recruiting some talented 'ringers' to guide the Plough Inn to its first league title, shared with the Coach & Horses, Welwick, and the Commercial Hotel, Withernsea. The team them, as it is now, was a mixture of able players and those not so able, but as keen as mustard.
A year later and the club were inexplicably relegated to Division 11, an alarming slide coinciding with a particularly good year for beer, where the Plough's bitter was like nectar and has been ever since!! Promotion back to Division 1 took place in 1994 and the team have enjoyed the rich pickings of silverware almost every year since.
The captaincy has changed hands occasionally over the years with Simon Slack and Mark Todd having their turn at leading the Plough Inn to glory. The team lives by two motto's - None Shall Pass and Don't Panic - and have used them, at times, to overcome predicted defeats and turn them into sensational victories. To this day landlord, Ian Robinson, has witnessed three league championships, several cup wins and three Lifeboat Shield victories. From 1989 to 2001 the team played its home games at the Withernsea High School but a new dawn breaks in the year 2002 as they move habitat to Patrington Cricket Ground and plans are in the pipeline for a new pitch behind the Plough Inn at Hollym in 2003. The Plough Inn CC has come a long way since those early wooden spoon years. A committee is now in place, headed by chairman Chris Morfitt. The end of season presentation nights are second to none and those lazy, hazy Sundays in the beer garden seem to get better and better.
