HOLLYM ENVIRONMENT GROUP

This is a small group consisting of Joe Speck, John Boasman and Barrie Fisher, which was formed through the Millennium Committee. The Group's initial aims are to try to enhance the village in any way possible. Grants have been successfully applied for to provide 12 planters, which are placed around the village and householders keep them maintained. Most recently another grant has been applied for to help with the cost of repairing a village seat near the bus shelter at the cross roads and to supply a new one. In the autumn of both 1999 and 2000 over 2000 daffodils were planted in and around the village and in springtime the whole village looks lovely.

Further grants have enabled the group to build a village sign, which has been placed on the main road going through the village near to South Leys Lane.  Jo Speck, with the help of several volunteers, has built it. The sign incorporates an areas for plants and the name of the village.

SHOWT

S .H .O .W. T. stands for South Holdemess Opposes Wind Turbines

SHOWT was formed in the summer of 1998 following an exhibition at Hollym Village Hall by Renewable Energy System (RES) which detailed proposals to erect 15 x 252 feet Wind Turbines at Eastfield Farm, Hollym. This was later reduced to 13 turbines.

The Action Group was formed to fight against the development of land based wind power stations in South Holderness and consisted of parish council representatives from all over the area, together with local business people who all shared concerns.

It was soon realised that Hollym was not going to be the only area selected for turbine development. Several licenses to build wind farms were granted along the coast.

The next application to follow was to build 3 turbines at Outstray Farm, Sunk Island, followed by an application to build 9 turbines at Out Newton, Easington.

Our campaign went from strength to strength. Our Appeal was launched and people donated several thousand pounds and East Riding Council received letters from concerned residents objecting to the developments. One wonderful thing to come out of the fight against the turbines was that it brought all the local villages together and many friendships were formed that will last for many years to come .

At the first stage of the planning system the application for the 3 turbines at Outstray Farm, Sunk Island was withdrawn by the company, after the Wind Company ceased.

The other two applications went before ERYC and they voted against both.

We were then faced with a Public inquiry. Because of the support of the general public we were able to pay for professional help. SHOWT was fortunate to be able to engage Mr. Geoffrey Sinclair and John Campbell QC. These men both have a wealth of experience in the field of opposing wind turbine developments. Also, many members of SHOWT spent many long hours collating information and some of this information has indeed helped other groups

In February 2000 we faced a Public inquiry, which lasted 2 weeks. SHOWT worked endlessly and put forward a truly magnificent and professional case against both applications.

In the summer of 2000 we received the decision of the Public inquiry. The application for the development at Hollym had been refused but unfortunately the application at Out Newton had been approved (subject to conditions). SHOWT was obviously disappointed that the development at Out Newton had been approved, but was more than pleased to learn that the conditions stated that the concrete bases have to be removed after decommissioning.
