In 1960, after an inaugural meeting in November the previous year, Hollym W I held it’s first meeting. Many of the village ladies had attended Patrington W.I. and decided to form their own institute. To begin with they met in the school hall, but in 1963 when the village hall was built they moved their meetings.
The W I meets every third Wednesday of the month at 7 15 pm. After a short business meeting we are entertained by guest speakers with such varied subjects as 'Bound for Botany Bay', Alternative Medicine, Cookery demonstrations, etc. etc. etc.
Florence Coverdale was the first president and then followed Mary Carmichael who was in office for the next 29 years. There were at that time 45 members paying 3s. 6d. membership fee. Membership is now £17.25p.
We are affiliated to the National Federation of Women's institute but on a local level we are part of the East Yorkshire Federation, who are based in Beverley.
One main fundraising event is organised each year to provide necessary funds.
In 1970 the first Summer Show was held and is still going strong. It is open to W 1. members and villagers and this is held towards the end of July each year, and is sponsored by the parish council.
During 2000 seven members of the W.I. embroidered a church kneeler for Hollym church, which depicts the W.I. logo.
Several trips are organised each year and these can be to the theatre, shopping trips, special events organised by the federation, a stately home - you name it and we have been there.
Organised craft days are held each year when we can be learning how to do patchwork, flower arranging, painting, etc.
